Greener Leith – March update

“Thanks to ongoing funding support from the Vegware Community Fund Greener Leith has been able to hire a very well qualified community gardener to run monthly workshops in two local community gardens. Ben works for as a horticulture tutor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and is passionate about organic gardening, so we’re really pleased that someone so qualified has come forwards. This month Ben is meeting with the volunteers that are already active in the gardens, with the aim of putting together a planting and workshop schedule for the forthcoming months.

We are plan to launch the workshops next month by planting up a specially designed planter that doubles up as secure bike parking in each garden. As well as providing an extra place for volunteers to get growing in, we also hope the planters will encourage more volunteers to visit the garden on their bicycles.

Lastly, Vegware funding was also vital in helping us to unlock further funding from the Peoples Postcode Lottery Trust. They’ve provided us with funding to plant a Childrens Orchard on Leith Links that will see us plant around 100 rare variety fruit trees with local primary school kids and local community volunteers on the Links. Ben will be helping out during the planting days, and then encouraging volunteers to get stuck into the communtiy gardens after the orchard has been planted. “
