Guba – May Update

To raise awareness for Guba in one our local communities, we were delighted when the organisers of local music & arts festival, Bushfire, agreed to allow us to run a small cafe selling locally produced food from our locally sourced, recycled, adobe block cafe stand over the festival weekend from 25th – 27th May.

Our team of Permaculture facilitators & natural builders became the cafe team overnight for 3 days only. We wanted to introduce ourselves to a new audience from within one of our local communities, raise awareness of the training projects we offer & promote our solutions to improving quality of life within our communities.

We were delighted to find a Vegware outlet in Cape Town who could mail 1,000 completely compostable cups which we used to serve our hot drinks, smoothies & juices in while also promoting the support Vegware have been providing us with over the months. Timing could not have been better as the festival organisers had decided to ban plastic & styrofoam packaging from all vendors & were levying a charge to those not compliant. So we hope Vegware products received some well deserved promotion in our small Kingdom & next years festival becomes a Vegware year!

Everyone involved in the running of our Cafe did so as volunteers – the vibe & teamwork was incredible & a lot of fun! We were thrilled with the positive responses we received despite the fact that our vegetarian, homegrown food, smoothies, juices & herbal teas were 150% more popular than we had imagined. We were interviewed by the local & international press, asked a lot of questions about the services we provide at Guba, recipes were swapped & offers of volunteering given. The festival organisers were even kind enough to say that the Guba Cafe “was a major Bushfire highlight”!

We learnt a lot & look forward to making much more of this great opportunity next year.
