Rhubarb Farm – May Update

On 1st May we employed 3 more 16-18 year old apprentices – Louis, Connor and Gemma, so we now have 11, doing their NVQ2 and learning about horticulture. We now have potatoes, beans, onions, cabbages, lettuce, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, peas and celery planted out. Our big polytunnel – 18m x 5.5m is now up and starting to be planted up – very exciting for producing good salad crops for our veg box scheme. The weather had further negative impact on our work, firstly with heavy rain, and then burning sun which made it difficult for everyone. Another cookery course for 6 people with mental ill health took place in our café and all participants asked to do another one as they enjoyed it so much. We have also won funding through a partnership bid with Food Aware of Rotherham, who recycle surplus food from the food industry – we will deliver more cookery courses, veg growing courses and veg boxes for families in food poverty.
