Community Fund – Royal Edinburgh Community Gardens – December Update
November has been a time for reflection in the garden, with the cold weather coming in and thoughts turning towards the next growing season. We’ve been busy planning for next year in all areas of the garden, and hoping for great weather and wonderful crops in 2013!
We’ve been going through old seed packets and sorting out what we have to sow for early next year. Thank you Laura and John for doing this it looks great. We are really looking forward to next year’s sowing !! The gardening team have been hard at work collecting leaves from all over the garden and then composting them in our new composting system. Tons of leaves!! Well done!! The orchard has finally been put to bed for winter with all the nettles cut and raked up.
The nursery orchard has been mulched and we’ve put spiral guards on each young tree for protection from the rabbits. Rob and Bill have made a sturdy looking saw horse with left over pieces of wood. The beds in South garden have had a good amount of compost spread over them ready for the spring planting.
The team have planted out the autumn onion sets and covered them from the rabbits and birds. Good luck onions see you next year: here’s hoping for another giant! Robbie and Paul identified where the rabbit hole was in north garden and have repaired it. The glasshouse is still looking fantastic with broad beans planted and the Small Steps group have planted peas. Thank you, we’re looking forward to sharing them next year.
Last Wednesday we all had a great morning splitting logs ready for the colder months ahead. Everybody had a great time and after an hour and a half we were all very warm. We’re looking forward to toasted marshmallows soon on an open fire. This month in the gardens we are running a couple of courses before Christmas; Soil and Seed and making Christmas decorations from natural materials from the garden. So if you’re looking for something to do on crisp winter days, come along and join in the fun – there’s always lots to do and learn. Many thanks to all our members and volunteers for their hard work over this year. We’re looking forward to sharing a mince pie and a hot cup of tea before the year has passed, feel free to drop in!
