Community Fund – Greener Leith – March Update
You may remember that we organised a maintenance day for the Childrens’ Orchard at the beginning of March, which was partially cancelled because the weather was too cold…
We assumed that the weather would surely be better at the end of the month. Well, we were wrong. As the photos show, there was a blizzard raging on the Links, but with the help of volunteers from the Botanical Gardens we managed to finish the job of staking an mulching one hundred trees. We felt like we could have looked Scott of the Antarctic in the eye, trying to fix tree ties with our frozen hands and distributing 300 buckets full of mulch.
Thank you so much Ben, Kate, Cathy, Andy and Malcolm for coming out and braving the atrocious weather to work on the Children’s Orchard. Greener Leith is delighted with how the project is going and really appreciate everyone’s hard work. The trees are looking really chipper and professionally cared for, something that Greener Leith would have found hard to achieve on its own.
We also discussed the option of further improvements at the Children’s Orchard; bulb planting, interpretation boards, a mural, picnic tables, planting on the slopes of the cycle path etc. etc. We would welcome any ideas and thoughts on this as well as people who are keen to take any of these further in which case please contact charlotte@greenerleith.org.uk.
For now, all the trees need is warmth and sun..
Hope that we can report on a bumper harvest later this year!
