Community Fund – Batley Girls’ High School – August Update
Word must have got out that we are doing good things at the farm as the new year 7 students are turning up at break and lunch times in high numbers. A little hectic but very rewarding!
Last years helpers are still attending so we should build on this as we provide specific scheduled activities. I hope it’s not just the fine weather that’s the attraction!
The much appreciated support provided within the school and from Vegware has allowed the farm to replace our iconic goats that suffered a fatal illness during the holidays.
The ducks have been through a period of moulting that has lasted some 8 weeks or so without producing a single egg. However the birds look in tip top condition now and are beginning to show interest in each other again so our incubation activities may well be getting on track again very soon.
We continue harvesting our crops that have been well received by students, staff, and our kitchen alike include apples, squash, tomatoes, courgettes, carrots and onions.
The lunch time Gardening Club are involved in creating new raised beds linked with the farms activities so to consolidate a more central and manageable activity.
The school will hold its open evening on Thursday 18th September and we plan to make some goats milk soap as an activity with our supportive TRA members who attend the farm and allotments on a regular and daily basis.
Demonstrations on planting and taking geranium cuttings will enhance this busy but rewarding evening.
