The Children’s Orchard is going from strength to strength. Last weekend we held our 5th annual pruning day in collaboration with the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and the trees are now looking like proper trees. In the next few days the Forest School classes are also going to start again and this time the children from the local schools won’t have to sit on the cold ground as the picnic benches, made by inmates from Soughton Prison, will have been installed for their and their teachers comfort.
They will be working on a project to make information about the orchard more easily available on-line. http://greenerleith.org.uk/orchard/ contains information about the trees in the orchard, the varieties and their cultivation, as well as drawings and poems by local children. Greener Leith is hoping to do more fundraising in the future to enable more children to benefit from this unique variety of hands-on learning. Let’s hope that this year brings a bumper crop!
