Cornwall Airport in Newquay started composting their used Vegware packaging in 2024. Our Sales and Environmental teams worked with the waste collector, First Mile, to set up circular solutions for used Vegware packaging. 

After conducting a waste audit, Sustainability Development Coordinator, Lauren Llewellyn noticed that a lot of Vegware’s plant-based compostable packaging was ending up in general waste. Looking for a composting solution, she contacted Vegware’s Environmental team.  

After understanding Cornwall Airport’s sustainability goals, Vegware’s Senior Waste Management Consultant, David Dyce was able to advise on the composting solutions available. For Cornwall Airport’s needs and requirements, one solution stood out – First Mile’s Return and Recycle scheme. 

Together with First Mile, we worked with Cornwall Airport to establish a post back service. With the system implemented across the whole site, used Vegware packaging could be collected and sent for in-vessel composting.

Rather than go to waste in landfill, compost is a vital resource. It provides essential organic nutrients to the soil. The waste from Cornwall Airport is taken to Envar’s facility in Cambridgeshire. The compost is used to sustain local agriculture.
