Behind the scenes: Managing waste on film sets

Scotland’s landscapes make it a favourite for filmmakers. But shooting in remote locations
comes with a unique set of challenges, especially when it comes to waste.
Our new case study explores how Vegware partnered with Location One, a production and
location services provider, to make waste management on set more efficient and
responsible.

The Challenge

Film sets are temporary, high-paced environments and are often in areas far from standard
waste infrastructure. Disposing of food waste, packaging, and other materials responsibly
isn’t always straightforward.

The Solution

By combining Vegware’s compostable foodservice packaging with Location One’s Eco Pod—
a custom-built trailer for on-set waste sorting—the production team had a clear system:
Dry recycling, general waste, and food waste + compostables were all separated on location.
Vegware’s packaging went straight into the food waste stream, helping to simplify sorting.

The outcome

Compostable waste from set was taken to an in-vessel composting facility, where it was
turned into nutrient-rich soil improver. That means zero waste to landfill for this stream and
a cleaner, simpler solution for set crews.
