When it comes to sustainability in schools, awareness is high. Students care. Staff care. Parents care. But turning that awareness into everyday action is where the real challenge lies.
That’s exactly what Watford Grammar School for Boys set out to do.
With more than 1,300 students and a long history of leadership in the community, the school wanted to make it easier for everyone to do the right thing with their waste. What started as a conversation about recycling quickly evolved into something bigger: a full composting system that captures both food waste and Vegware packaging.

Designing a system that works
Working in partnership with the caterer and waste contractor, we helped design a simple, practical solution that students and staff could use confidently every day. From clear bin signage to school-wide communication, the focus was on making composting straightforward, visible, and built to last .
A system built to last
The result? A system launched in just three months that continues to run smoothly, with composting now part of everyday school life .
If you’re a school, caterer or facilities team looking to simplify waste and introduce composting on site, this case study shows what’s possible with the right partners and the right setup.
