Case study: Social Security Scotland
In 2025, an invitation to a sustainability event at Social Security Scotland’s Glasgow office opened the door to a significant expansion of our Close the Loop composting service in Scotland.
The introduction came through BaxterStorey, the contract caterer on site and a partner we already worked with across multiple Scottish Government locations. Recognising the opportunity, we moved quickly to bring Social Security Scotland into the fold, which would extend our Close the Loop coverage to all seven Scottish Government sites.

The transition was straightforward. Our existing relationship with Mitie Waste, the facilities management company operating across the estate, meant the groundwork was already in place making onboarding efficient and disruption-free.
Measurable impact
Through our in-house waste consultancy;
- We introduced compostable packaging binsthroughout the building
- Created bespoke bin signage
- Provided other restaurant comms (info for the staff newsletter and table talkers)
- Organised an engagement day in their canteen
The site captured more Vegware packaging & food scraps than what they were expecting. This doubled their waste volume in the first couple of weeks of joining the service. This was all collected for industrial composting in Scotland and turns to high grade compost within 12 weeks.

“Introducing Vegware and the Close the Loop service at our office has been a great step forward in our sustainability journey. The transition has been smooth, participation is high, and colleague feedback has been really positive. It’s brilliant to see our colleagues engaged and committed to reducing our environmental impact together.“
Craig Mungall (Operations Building Manager)
Looking ahead
One of the many positive outcomes was that Social Security Scotland has decided to keep using Vegware products, showing the importance of building relationships with key stakeholders including contract caterers BaxterStorey.
“The move has been fantastic for both our team and our customers. Everyone has embraced the new system and Close the Loop has made it easy for us to ensure packaging is properly composted. It’s been great to see such positive feedback, and we’re proud to be contributing to a greener, more sustainable workplace.“
