In the neighbourhood: Giuseppe’s Tiramisu

Have you ever tried a plant-based Tiramisu before? Enter Giuseppe’s Tiramisu – a new vegan Tiramisu shop that opened last month at BOXPARK in Shoreditch, London. Inspired by his Nonna, Giuseppe began sharing his vegan recipe to much acclaim on Instagram. This encouraged him to bring his creations to pop-up events this summer.

Read on to hear about about Giuseppe’s dream collaboration, his favourite things to do in Shoreditch and advice he would give anyone looking to open up their own business.

What’s the story behind Giuseppe’s Tiramisu?

It started as a pop-up at BOXHALL. I developed the recipes myself, made up to 120 tiramisus a day, and figured out everything from production to food safety as I went.

We sold out every single day for six weeks straight, which told me there was something here. Then came the festivals – 2,200 tiramisus in one weekend at Vegan Camp Out, and trading at the Silverstone Grand Prix, which was a goal I’d written down the year before. Now we have our own shop at BOXPARK Shoreditch.

The goal has always been simple: a tiramisu so good you’d never know it was plant-based.

Why did you choose Vegware?

It just made sense.

Everything we make is plant-based, and now even our packaging! They look and feel premium, which matters because people eat with their eyes first.

A tiramisu this good deserves a pot that does it justice, and we can feel good about what happens to it afterwards.

What’s the earliest memory you have of your Nonna cooking?

Making bread and tiramisu with her, getting in trouble for licking the bowl with raw egg. That’s where it all comes from.

When we say “made like Nonna”, we mean it. Her tiramisu is the standard I’m still chasing every time I make a batch, but reinvented to be plant-based.

What would be your dream collab tiramisu flavour?

A coffee roaster collab where the espresso is built specifically for the tiramisu.

What advice would you give to someone looking to open a shop?

Prove demand before you sign anything. Pop-ups and festivals taught me what sells, what doesn’t, and how to make it at scale, all before I had the overheads of a shop.

Keep the menu tight, because doing a few things brilliantly beats doing loads of things okay. And get your systems sorted early, from production to food safety to stock. It’s not glamorous, but it’s what lets you sell out every day without everything falling apart. Also make sure you know your Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)!

What are your favourite things to do in Shoreditch?

Get a matcha at Artful Blend, an Acai from Acai Berry, take a walking lunch break and grab food at Sushi Sprint – their tofu Buddha bowl is amazing!

What’s next for Giuseppe’s Tiramisu?

Lots! We’ve just launched a smaller size, and we’re working on a classic tiramisu, which is our most requested flavour by far. We’ve also got seasonal flavours coming through the winter.

Signature drinks are coming soon to go alongside the tiramisu, and there are some exciting collaborations we can’t talk about just yet. Keep an eye on our Instagram to be the first to know.
