Composting at Cambridge Half Marathon 2023

Sunday 5th March 2023 saw the latest Cambridge Half Marathon take place. As with previous years, the route took runners past historic landmarks, through the Cambridgeshire countryside and into the grounds of two of the city’s iconic colleges. The 2023 edition of the race had a slightly different feel however. Cambridge Half Marathon have been working with a specialist environmental consultancy since 2012, making the commitment year-on-year to improve the sustainability of the event. 2023 was the year that the event went single-use plastic bottle free.

The result

Up to 50,000 single use plastic bottles were eliminated from the event. Instead, the organisers opted for Vegware’s plant-based compostable cups which were collected, and then composted approximately 20 miles away.

In under 12 weeks, the compost was made available for Cambridgeshire-based businesses and organisations to use. One example was Cambridge University’s Jesus College where the PAS100 compost was used on their landscaped grounds.

“We had a great event and the cups worked really well; we had a lot less litter around the course (which the street cleaners were over the moon with).”
